International Conference of Physics Students 2024 - Georgia

From the 04.08. – 11.08.2024, I had the opportunity to attend the International Conference of Physics Students 2024 (ICPS). This annual event marks the founding event of the International Association of Physics Students (IAPS). This year ~300 participants gathered in Tblisi (Georgia 🇬🇪) to experience an intense week of scientific talks, workshops and networking.

I had the pleasure to present my former working group of the Dysprosium Laboratory supervised by Prof. Dr. Lauriane Chomaz in Heidelberg where I obtained my Bachelor degree roughly one year ago. More information regarding the Dysprosium Lab can be found here: https://www.physi.uni-heidelberg.de/Forschung/QF/

One highlight which stood out for me was being awarded the 3rd place in the AC5 Early Career Scientist Prize (ECSP) of the Affiliated Commission 5 (AC5) of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP). The AC5 ECSP aims to recognize associative engagement and scientific excellence. This prize acknowledges Leadership in Physics Student Associations, Physics Event Organization, and Engagement in Physics Outreach. More information about the AC5 Early Career Scientist Prize can be found here: https://iaps.info/opportunities/other-elected-positions/ac5-council/early-career-scientist-prize/

For me, the ICPS 2024 was an incredibly valuable experience, as it was the largest and most diverse event I have attended so far, with ~300 participants representing over 20 nationalities. In addition to the scientific program, participants were introduced to Georgian culture by excursions (for example to Georgia's Diamond Glass Bridge in the Dashbashi canyon) and additional program elements (such as the Nations Evening, where each nation prepared their own typical dishes).

A big thanks goes to the Georgian Association of Physics Students (GAPS) which served as local organizers with a special thanks to George Chanturia as Head of the OC and the Free University of Tbilisi for hosting this incredible event! Finally, I would like to express my deep gratitude to Cyrus Walther who, as former IAPS President for the past two years, has shown an indescribable dedication in making IAPS to what it is today. At the same time, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Niloofar Jokar (former Events Manager of IAPS) for being elected as the new IAPS President!

I am really looking forward to seeing all of you next year in Novi Sad!
